Biography

As a senior advisor on research at the Mycotic Diseases Branch, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), I develop and oversee research program for our group with the goal of preventing illness and death from fungal diseases. Our studies are focused on the development of detection and genotyping methods for fungi, understanding the antifungal resistance trends and investigating ecology and population genetics o fungal pathogens aimed at identifying sources of infection and preventing transmission. Our group pioneered the use of whole genome sequence typing for investigating outbreaks of fungal infections, and we were one of the first to describe global emergence of novel multidrug resistant yeast, Candida auris. Other fungi that we study in our group include Coccidioides sp., Histoplasma capsulatum, Aspergillus fumigatus, Mucoromycetes and others.
